Keep your recordings safe

Your saved recordings belong to this browser on this computer until you export them. They do not sync to other computers. Clearing browser data, or using another computer, can remove them unless you export them first. Drafts you have not saved are lost when you leave this page.

The ZIP holds one audio file per sound plus a manifest that lists which sound each file belongs to. To use the audio inside PowerPoint, the ZIP’s README explains the conversion step (WebM does not play in every PowerPoint).

Targeted Recheck

Printable Letter Identification Recheck — Forms A and B

Optional paper forms for informally rechecking letter names after targeted instruction. Printing or downloading them does not change Check 1 scores, mastery, or unlock anything.

Form A — Initial Letter Identification Recheck

Form B — Follow-Up Letter Identification Recheck

Purpose

These forms let you informally recheck letter identification after targeted instruction. Each form has uppercase and lowercase letters, repeated and in mixed order.

Part A — Point to the Letter

  1. Name a selected uppercase or lowercase letter.
  2. The student points to the matching letter on the page.
  3. Check whether the student found the correct letter.
  4. Repeat with different target letters, including previously missed letters.

Part B — Say the Letter Names

  1. The student looks at the letter grid.
  2. The student names the letters aloud.
  3. Note incorrect responses, skipped letters, or letters that need more instruction.
  4. Use the results to decide what to reteach next.

You may focus on the letters a student previously missed instead of asking every student to do every item. This is not timed. These forms are about letter names and letter identification, not letter sounds.

Suggested sequence

  1. Initial instruction: review Check 1 results, find the missed uppercase and lowercase letters, and use the five-minute mini-lesson and the approved slides.
  2. Form A: use it after targeted practice. Record errors and letters that need more instruction.
  3. Additional practice: keep teaching the letters that are still difficult.
  4. Form B: use it later, with the different letter arrangement. Compare the student’s performance on the target letters.

Forms A and B use the same sample set of target letters in different arrangements. They are not standardized or validated equivalent test forms. Use the editable Word files to change the letters for an individual student.

How to use these slides

  1. Look at which letters the student missed.
  2. Open Uppercase or Lowercase and jump to that letter.
  3. Point to the letter and say its name.
  4. Have the student say the name, then find it in the practice row.
  5. Fix mistakes right away. Keep it quick.

Teach only the letters the student missed, not all 26. These slides teach letter NAMES. Letter sounds are Check 2.

Paper practice (optional)

Write the letters the student missed on a sheet of paper. The student copies each letter a few times on the page and says its name every time they write it.

Teacher Sound Cards — 44 Sounds

6 pages, 8 cards per page, with cutting lines

Student Practice Sound Cards — 44 Sounds

6 pages, 8 cards per page, with cutting lines

How to Use the Check 2 Sound Cards

  1. Review the student’s Check 2 results.
  2. Identify the letter sounds that need more instruction.
  3. Select the matching teacher and student sound cards.
  4. Sit facing the student and clearly model the target sound.
  5. Let the student watch your mouth as you make the sound.
  6. Ask the student to make the sound.
  7. Show the printed letter or spelling that goes with the sound.
  8. Ask the student to make the sound on their own.
  9. Correct right away and give more practice when needed.

Pick only the sounds that fit this student’s needs. The full set of cards is not a required sequence that every student must complete.

Students learning English

Students learning English may produce certain sounds differently because of their first-language background. Model English sounds explicitly, provide opportunities for listening and repetition, and distinguish language development from demonstrated gaps in letter-sound knowledge.

31 assessment targets vs. 44 teaching cards

The Check 2 assessment checks 31 targets: consonant letter sounds, short vowels, and long vowels. The 44 cards are a wider teaching library of English sounds and spelling patterns. They are two different lists. The cards do not change Check 2, its scoring, accepted answers, or what unlocks next.

Provisional recommendations — based on configurable draft thresholds, not yet finalized instructional cut scores. This groups by decoding/foundational-skill evidence only; it never diagnoses language ability or English proficiency.

What’s real right now

Working

  • Teacher records the word alone and the whole sentence, in your own voice, for all 27 words.
  • Student hears the word, hears the sentence, slides a finger pacer that lights the current word and dims the ones behind it, reads it out loud, and records a final read.
  • The final read saves as a file the student turns in through Canvas.
  • Colors and dark/light are student-selectable and remembered on the computer.
  • Teacher can Export all recordings to one file, and Load that file onto any other computer so your voice is there too.
  • No text-to-speech anywhere — the only voices are yours and the student’s.

Partly working / honest limits

  • Tapping a single word replays the whole sentence so the student hears that word in context. Per-word audio for every word isn’t recorded — the “Hear the word” button covers the target word only. True tap-any-word audio would mean recording every word separately; that’s a later choice, not faked here.
  • The listen sweep moves evenly across the sentence for the length of your recording. It is a pacing guide, not exact word timing.
  • Microphone and file save need the page opened from a real web link (Canvas), not a file on the desktop.

Not built (on purpose)

  • Automatic pronunciation scoring — never faked. The student and teacher listen and judge.
